In speaking about the AFL and the Grand Final, I wanted to not only share what AFL is as a sport, but the significance of the AFL to me personally - in particular, my relationship with my grandfather Bryan, and the bond we share through this sport. AFL stands for Australian Football League.
For those who follow the AFL, it is more than just a game! This is particularly true for those in the state of Victoria - which is the birthplace of AFL. In fact, on May 17, 1859 - a group of men sat around a table at a pub in East Melbourne, Victoria and wrote the 10 rules that formed the basis of what has become today's game. That piece of paper still exists today and can be viewed at the AFL museum here in Melbourne.
My connection to the AFL isn't just about watching games on TV or attending matches at the stadium. It's deeply rooted in my childhood, thanks to my beloved grandfather, Bryan.
At 86, my granddad's still crazy about the game. He takes me to matches, just like when I was a kid. Seeing his excitement as we chat about games and past moments reminds me of the AFL's enduring charm.
This year was extra special. We finally got to go to watch Carlton play in the finals. The best part was Carlton won the first two rounds of finals! They couldn’t quite make it to the final showdown - the grand final - but sharing that win with my granddad, seeing his old-school enthusiasm, is a memory I'll cherish. I am very grateful for the bond we share through the sport.

In many ways, my journey with the AFL reflects the values that we uphold here at Bynder.
